I have read someplace that being more mindful will make you a better leader - less impulsive. has anyone had any experience of this kind of improvement?

There are a couple of pieces on the rezl blog that make interesting reading - see here https://rezl.com/blog/ . The blog is a great resource.
This post (https://rezl.com/2018/06/17/disruptive-times-require-a-new-approach-to-management-and-leadership/) highlights some work by Mckinsey on how being able to pause (rather that react) enables leaders to think through their choices, to consider the bigger picture and even to test out possibilities. This could be big stuff or . This is mindful leadership.
Who commits to follow a leader who is blinkered and impulsive? Success will come from making wise decisions.

This post shows how mindful leaders make better decisions... based on research by a major management training organisation:
https://rezl.com/2021/08/13/mindfulness-benefits-decision-making/
"Mindfulness research shows that such heightened awareness allows for early identification of decisions that need to be made: More creative problem-solving; More thorough ethical evaluation; Improved ability to recognise the limits of knowledge; and Improved ability to identify trade-offs and unintended consequences of potential decisions"

I've been working with rezl for two months - I am certainly less impulsive and try to respond to events with questions. I have also seen how it is necessary to rise above pressure and chaos to ensure I have a clear understanding of a situation and what is to be done... rather then jumping in with a solution that may not be the right response.

There is a great blog post about making high stakes decisions here (e.g. like landing a plane when the fuel is low or managing a crisis at work). A mindful approach is key.
It's about not getting overwhelmed by the emerging information; not being overwhelmed by emotions if you're in danger; not becoming distracted as more information comes in while you are focussing. You should avoid treating people poorly when under stress... as they will believe that this is the real you; and not becoming overwhelmed by the situation or the consequences of your choices.
